"Colored" Lake

There is a red and white shallow shoal Lake in the southwest of Bolivia. This is the famous Laguna Colorada. It's also called Lake Colorada. Mainly because the lake water contains red minerals, so from a distance to the lake, you can see the lake water is red.

Borax in the lake forms a small white island, scattered on the lake surface rich in red algae, forming a beautiful scenery. A two-color lake with red algae and gray-white borax.

The color is due to some red sediments and algae in the lake. Besides, because of the rich contents of sodium, magnesium, borax and gypsum in the lake, some plankton grow very well, so that the whole lake is stained with a faint red.

In 1971, the association signed a resolution to become a member of the international Ramsauer Convention on wetlands. The lake is also part of the Edadu Avaro Andean fauna national sanctuary.

It's still a fierce habitat. The algae in the lake provide rich food for the rare flamingos and the Chilean Flamingo and the Andes flamingos, so they will nest at the lake. In addition, there are more than 50 species of birds in their homes.
